FAQ

  • What does “Soapwalla” mean?

Walla means creator or master in Hindi. Soapwalla means soap master. A friend dubbed founder Rachel Winard “soap walla” and she loved the name.

  • Why did you start Soapwalla?

Out of sheer necessity! Rachel has systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), an autoimmune illness that can manifest itself in a number of ways. Like others who suffer from lupus, she getsterrible skin rashes, hives, and irritated skin patches. When it was at its worst, Rachel could barely use water on her skin without irritation.

Soapwalla was born one late night in early 2002, after months of unsuccessfully hunting for face and body products that wouldn’t aggravate her sensitized skin. Rachel tried everything on the market she could find, without luck, and finally decided to start making products that were as healthy and wholesome as possible. The product line grew from there.

  • What does it mean that Soapwalla uses food-grade ingredients and cold/expeller pressed oils?

Food-grade ingredients have been processed and packaged in such a way that they are deemed safe enough for consumption. In order to provide the purest, most effective products possible, Soapwalla uses ingredients such as freshly ground oats, pure almonds, sea salts, organic raw sugar, and freshly ground spices in my formulations.

In addition, Soapwalla purchases small-batch cold- and expeller-pressed oils for use in my products. Cold press processing means that only the most minimal processing was used in the entire production chain. Since cold-pressed oils have gone through less processing, they retain their beneficial phytonutrients. Phytonutrients, including antioxidants and phytosterols, naturally protect against oxidation and free-radical formation. Cold-pressed and expeller-pressed oils use only mechanical pressure and low temperatures, and are gently extracted over a period of time. Chemical additives are never used (unlike during conventional extraction).

Please note: even though Soapwalla products smell good enough to eat, essential oils should not be consumed. Soapwalla products are meant only for external use.

  • Are Soapwalla’s products vegan?

All Soapwalla products are vegan, as certified by the Coalition for Consumer Information on Cosmetics’ Leaping Bunny Program and PETA’s Caring Consumer Program. Soapwalla does not use any animal-derived byproducts. Soapwalla never, ever tests any products on animals, only willing humans! Soapwalla only purchases raw ingredients from producers who pledge the same.

  • Are Soapwalla’s products gluten-free?

Soapwalla products are gluten-free. The ground oats that are used in our Almond Oil and Oats Glycerin Soap Bar are certified gluten-free and purchased from Bob’s Red Mill.

  • Do you use fragrance oils or essential oils?

We do not use fragrance oils or synthetic ingredients. All Soapwalla products are made with pure essential oils, and we use certified organic when available.

  • Do you use glycerin?

Soapwalla uses only certified food-grade, kosher, vegan glycerin. Glycerin is a natural humectant that enables the outer layers of skin to retain moisture.

  • Does Soapwalla have GMOs in any of its products?

No! Soapwalla does not use ingredients that have been derived from GMOs (genetically modified organisms) or GE (genetically engineered) ingredients or components.

  • What is the shelf life of Soapwalla’s products?

Soapwalla products contain high concentrations of natural active ingredients and are housed in cobalt blue glass or PET plastic to preserve their integrity. PET plastic protects contents against contaminants and can be recycled multiple times without losing its strength, making it a natural choice for Soapwalla. PET plastic does NOT contain PVC, Bisphenol-A, or heavy metals (mercury, lead, cadmium, and hexavalent chromium).

Soapwalla’s formulations utilize food-grade preservative systems that ensure that products are most potent within the first three months after opening. Soapwalla’s Soap Bars have a shelf life of two years. Think of Soapwalla’s products as food for your skin; it’s best to purchase what you will consume in a six-month period.

  • Are Soapwalla’s products truly made in the USA? If so, where exactly?

Yes – Soapwalla’s products are proudly produced at the Old American Can Factory in Brooklyn, NY.

  • Are Soapwalla products certified organic?

While all of Soapwalla’s products are 100% natural, we cannot say that they are 100% organic because the process of obtaining USDA organic certification is a long and expensive one. Soapwalla has a stringent system in place in which we vet all our suppliers to ensure they practice sustainable agriculture, and we only purchase ingredients from suppliers that use environmentally friendly practices. In addition, Soapwalla will only work with suppliers who have themselves been proven to be animal cruelty-free by independent parties.

Soapwalla diligently sources the highest quality ingredients we can obtain, and we purchase from local farmers whenever possible. In addition, Soapwalla products come packaged in cobalt blue glass or PET plastic.

PET plastic protects and preserves contents against contaminants, and can be recycled multiple times without losing its strength, making it a natural choice for Soapwalla. PET plastic does NOT contain PVC, Bisphenol-A, or heavy metals (mercury, lead, cadmium, and hexavalent chromium).

  • How does Soapwalla’s Deodorant Cream work?

Soapwalla’s Deodorant Cream is all-natural and uniquely powerful, utilizing superfine vegetable powders and clays, as well as lavender, peppermint and tea tree essential oils to absorb moisture, inhibit bacteria, and ensure a long-lasting and highly effective experience. The frosting-like consistency allows for easy manual application and rapid absorption, and is ideal for all skin types.

  • My Deodorant Cream arrived in a soft/liquefied state. What do I do?

Don't fret! Soapwalla does not use any unnecessary waxes or hardeners, so temperature fluctuations can alter the solidity of your deodorant but in no way compromises the effectiveness of the product. Should your Deodorant Cream arrive liquefied, simply mix thoroughly with a finger or chopstick, then pop the container in your freezer for about 30 minutes or until the Deodorant Cream has resolidified. It should be as good as new!

  • Why does the Deodorant come in a cream format?

When formulating the Deodorant Cream, Soapwalla founder Rachel Winard tried other application methods but ultimately nixed them for a few reasons: (1) the minimalist packaging is a nicer design, is easy to travel with, and is less wasteful; (2) a cream deodorant provides the user with more control over how much and where they'd like to apply it; (3) users don't get random white streaks on their clothing, and they can effortlessly cover the entire underarm. There's nothing weird about touching one's underarms. We promise.

  • What is lupus?

Lupus is a chronic inflammatory disease that occurs when your body's immune system attacks your own tissues and organs. Inflammation caused by lupus can affect many different body systems, including joints, skin, kidneys, blood cells, brain, heart and lungs.

Lupus can be difficult to diagnose because its signs and symptoms often mimic those of other ailments. The most distinctive sign of lupus — a facial rash that resembles the wings of a butterfly unfolding across both cheeks — occurs in many cases of lupus.
