The Power of Taking Action

They say you shouldn’t talk about politics, but let’s be honest: who hasn’t shared an article on Facebook, confided in a co-worker, or grumbled to whomever would listen in this past election cycle? We’re right there with you. Here at the Soapwalla Kitchen, we’ve gone through every emotion from anxious to frustrated to flat-out angry. Now we’re here to share a secret that will help save you some anxiety and hopefully bring some much-needed positivity to your life.

Talk is cheap! Instead of simply voicing opinions, let's act on them. Here are some quick tips on how you can be more involved:

Run for office! Go with us on this one. How amazing would it be to have local officials who are invested and really care? That person could be you.  Local positions have a lot of power over local, daily life. If you’re passionate about your community, check out local positions that are up for grabs.

Call Congress! Signing that online petition is just the first step. Make sure your voice is really heard by giving your local representatives a call. If you're feeling a little nervous, write out what you are most passionate about (or do a quick internet search for an established script) before getting on the phone.

Vote! It’s such an easy way to let your voice be heard. Don't forget local elections and primaries, too.

Volunteer! Set aside some time to help where your talents are most needed. Working to better your community is empowering for everyone involved. Animal lover? Walk dogs for a local rescue group. Civil rights is your passion? Phone bank for a group you love. Got job or medical or social services skills? Partner with a homeless shelter organization to help folks get back on their feet.

Donate! Pressed for time? You can always donate to an important cause. When it comes to giving money, it always helps to first think local. Also, quickly do some research to see exactly where it is that your money is going.

Let's make 2017 a better year for all of us. Together. We got this.
